Last night on the TV programme 'The Gadget Show', they featured a one wheel, electric, self-balancing scooter. This is called the Ryno. It has gyroscopes to make it self-balancing and the TV presenter was riding it relatively comfortably within just a few minutes. This looks very cool indeed and I want one. It will have a 30 mile range, top speed of 20mph. It looks like a lot of fun.
I found a video on the web that shows what it can do....
I have a nagging doubt though that these would be allowed in the UK. For all sorts of bureaucratic nonsense, Segways are not allowed here and I fear the same fate would happen with the Ryno.

Just looked it up and is will sell for $3,500.. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Very cool. But I still want to see video of one doing a panic stop. Even from 20mph I don't understand how the rider wouldn't do a face plant.
Gary:
NEXT YEAR, get one and re-vive your USA tour on the Ryno. With a 30 mile range we can keep you on our side of the pond, for years. Put some solar panels on it and it may increase your range by another mile or so

I would imagine it would be a lot like riding a unicycle, except it would do a lot more of the balancing than you.
Cool though.
Reminds me of that orange one wheeled bike we've seen floating around on the web here and there.
Gary, here's another option:
solowheel though I have my doubts they'll allow it in the UK if Segways are banned.

That reminds me of the Uno cycle that was developed by a youngster from Canada.

Might have to cut and paste the link of google Uno Cycle.
interesting video. they wouldn't let them on the sidewalk or bike paths here, and it'd really be a pain to only do 20mph with cars doing 30mph+.
still it'd be fun to ride around for a bit :)
The RYNO would be great to chase geese in the park..Man I hate geese.
It's great as a demo of what technology can do "on flat smooth ground", drop a piece of 2x4 in front of it and I can almost guarantee it will result in a face plant like Canajun said :-)
Well, that's trippy! Quite a concept. It would be interesting to try one out. Think I'd still rather go with a cute little retro scooter though.
I don't know. The Titanic was unsinkable..Just say'n:)
That's just weird. I wonder how hard it would be to register though. And something has to be done about the sound, maybe record a Harley and have that playing while you ride?
Just tried to sell the idea to my son for his first bike. I am not sure he is "all in" on the deal.
Ha Ha!! That is some little toy!! But how do you park it without it's little parking dock??? What will they come up with next?? I'm thinking I'd like a little personal flying scooter!
Bet one could do a wheely if you tried hard enough.
AHD – Ok, that’s quite a lot. Maybe my desire to get one just went down a little.
Canajun – Good point.
Bob – Touring on a Ryno could take a very long time indeed!
Mr Motorcycle – It does look cool. I imagine a few hours of riding it and the balancing would become much easier. I think the orange bike you mentioned is the Uno that Trobairitz has linked to below
Charlie6 / Dom – Wow, that Solowheel looks like fun, but you are right, they would be banned in the UK. There are too many dumb laws here. Maybe I should move.
Trobairitz – I had forgotten about the Uno. That looks a lot of fun as well. Too many toys, not enough time!
Chris – I agree. Not very practical, but fun. Especially if you got one and tried using it in the snow / or the ice!
Rob – Chasing geese in the park could be entertaining!
George – I would like to test that out!
bluekat – Maybe you are right. Something like a Vespa, I imagine....
Webster – Maybe you are right.
Twitch – LOL. Maybe they could sell i-Pods with mini speakers as an accessory!
Oz – I can imagine why he might want something a little more standard.
Eve – I have often thought about sports bikes that rely on a paddock stand. I don’t get that one either!
Webster – Wheelies take on a whole new meaning on that bike.....!
